‘Symphony’ was one of the longest tracks to edit for the whole disc, as it clocked in a few seconds short of 12 minutes, and editing the track to nearly 4 minutes took some inspired listening, and in the end the finished result became as close to a personal re edit that I dared go for the album.
I approached the editing initially by listening to how the track appeared on the original Euphoria album, which started around the 4:40 mark of the full length version of ‘Symphony’, removing the entire first section in the process. I kept this aspect identical for my edit, as I felt most of the main vibe of the track was contained in the middle 4 minutes at any rate.
I noticed that by starting the track at this point the ending arrived slightly too fast into ‘Dreaming’ which follows, so I did something I only did once on the entire album – I took a section from the dropped 4 minute intro, and spliced it in between 2 sections of the track in effect creating a subtle re arrangement of ‘Symphony’. As mentioned in another area of the blog, I did not want to go down this path at all for this album as I did not want to make the album into something it wasnt, but I felt there was enough creative license to allow it for this instance. I felt it kept the original vibe intact and did not draw any attention to itself at the same time.
You can hear this edit at 1:40 with the 303 section, and the following 32 bars are edited and extended to make a kind of ‘middle 8’ before the outro section of the track which arrives at 2:37.
The following track ‘Dreaming’ comes in at 3:13 and uses a combination of volume and filter automation to have it slowly melt into the outro of ‘Symphony’ and then right at the mix transition I placed a stab section from ‘Symphony’ to add as an audio cue for the beginning of ‘Dreaming’.
