The editing for ‘Stella’ was focused around extending the intro significantly so that it flowed with enough time to filter underneath the outro of ‘Domination’, opening the low pass filter right up until the first kick arrives at the start of the track (something which also mirrored the percussion synthesis of the original track), and tidying up the progression at 1:25 so it flowed over 16 bars to tighten the progression.
The ending of the track was where I put Ableton’s warping to good use, as anyone familiar with the original of ‘Stella’ will know that it slows down in BPM to a standstill, and I had to go in and warp each individual beat so that it kept a consistent tempo. If you listen carefully at 3:47 right at the end, you can hear the slowed down vocal on the original is speeded up to match the mix tempo, and I also warped a single kick drum hit from ‘Stella’ here to fit snugly under the pre kick of ‘Beachball’.
‘Beachball’ comes in at 3:20, and utilising the time stretching I had incorporated earlier, I managed to match the timing of the outro to the intro of ‘Beachball’ so that the ending vocal of “‘love me” from ‘Stella’ occurred just before the bass of ‘Beachball’ arrived, creating a perfect introduction for the point of ‘Beachball’ containing no vocals.
